Steel Drums
At The Hamilton Hill Arts Center

Locally, when you think of steel drumming, you think about the gifted youth of the Hamilton Hill Arts Center’s Steel Drum Bands. The two groups (affectionately known as the First and Second Generation) have brought the sounds of the Caribbean—and good music in general—to the capital region for years.

Family bonds are at the heart of both groups. The First Generation Steel Drum Band is made up of brothers Aaron and Ahmel Williams, and Spencer Anderson. The group also consists of Dayshawn Mojica, Dha’Sean Serrano and Charles Turner. Throughout the group’s existence, they have played many shows and received numerous accolades. This led to the group travelling to New York City’s historic Apollo Theater, where they participated in the theater’s world famous Amateur Night. Coming in second place, the group returned to Schenectady with new focus and vigor. The group's journey to the Apollo was documented in the book "Steel Drumming at the Apollo: The Road to Super Top Dog." Currently the individual members are exploring other musical projects, pursuing higher education, while honing their skills as one of the best steel drum groups upstate NY has known.

The Second Generation picks up where the First Generation left off. At the heart of this group are the Boston sisters: Shekinah, Zöe and Rhema. The group is rounded out by Neiman Ortiz. Aside from their participation in the group, these young ladies excel in art, dance, music, theater and athletics—to name a few! Taught by members of the First Generation Band, the Second Generation continues in the tradition and high standards set by their predecessors. Playing numerous shows, events and parades, these talented young ladies have helped to solidify the reputation of the Hamilton Hill Arts Center’s Steel Drum Band (synonymous with either group or at times both groups together), making it the name that it is.

Both groups are available for corporate and private events, as well as for school and other educational institutes. For more information, please see the Services page or call (518) 346-1262, ext. 10
