MUSIC & DANCE     

 

Annual Juneteenth Celebration

Where: Central Park; Schenectady, New York

Notes:  The annual festival commemorates the end of slavery and the beginning of freedom for ALL Americans. This free event will feature concerts, a parade,a carnival and The Federation of Black Cowboys. Chess International Grandmaster Maurice Ashley will also be on hand to accept the challenge from fellow chess aficianados. There will also be performances from local entertainers, workshops, vendors, exhibits, arts and crafts...and much more !

GALLERY EXHIBITS

 

"The Digital Eye"

Where: Jerry Burrell Gallery

When: February 24 - May 1. Weekdays, 10:30am - 5:30pm

Notes: This exhibit focuses on the medium of digital photography. Photographers will showcase the many possibilties that can be achieved with digital photography.

HIP HOP DANCE CLASS:  The class is held from 4-6pm on Mondays at the Hamilton Hill Arts Center and from 6-8pm on Thursday evenings at the Boys and Girls Club on Craig Street in Schenectady.  The class is for children and teens.  Your child must be able to follow instructions and know his or her left from right to participate.  The class is free, but children must be registered to participate. Please call 346-1262 for more information.

 

UMOJA DANCERS & DRUMMERS: Classes are held from 11am - 1pm on Saturdays at the Hamilton Hill Arts Center, 409 Schenectady Street in Schenectady. The Umoja Dancers and Drummers excite audiences locally and throughout New York State. This group of young people promotes an interest and appreciation for the cultural heritage of African-Americans through African dance and drumming performances. Through their dances and drumming, they exhibit the creative spirit that Africans and African-Americans cherish. Umoja is open to children ages 6 - 17. Parents are also invited to join. Classes begin in September. REGISTER NOW !!!


 

PROJECT ARTREACH:  After school, children can explore the arts through Project Artreach, an arts and crafts program which includes classes in drawing, painting,print making, phototgraphy and more. Children can learn to play musical insturments such as the steel drums of the Caribbean and piano. Project Artreach begins on September 4th. REGISTER NOW !!!

 

 

VISUAL ARTS EXPLORATION:  Explore drawing, painting, collage, printmaking and all sorts of interesting projects.  Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at the Hamilton HIll Arts Center from 4 - 6pm and Mondays and Wednesdays from 6-8 at the Boys and Girls Club on Craig Street. Classes begin on September 11th. Children must be registered to participate.

 

 

WORD UP ! POETRY : Creative youth artists with lyrics, rhymes and passion for the Spoken Word are invited to join the WORD UP ! Poetry sessions. If you write poetry or spoken word, and are between the ages of 13 and 19, come share and sharpen your skills in a fun, creative and supportive atmosphere. Spoken word artists who are brave of heart will be encouraged to share their works with the group. For those ready for a new level of expression, there is  the potential to have your works published. WORD UP ! POETRY begins on September 18th. REGISTER NOW !!!
