Umoja is a group of talented of young people who dance and drum to the beats of Africa, fostering an interest and appreciation for the cultural heritage of Black Americans. Traveling throughout New York State and locally, Umoja performs wearing the traditional dress of the African people. Through their dances and drumming, they exhibit the creativity and spirit that make the African and African-American cultures so rich.
Umoja is unique in that it stresses family participation during Saturday rehearsals; parents and siblings are encouraged to learn along side the children, further promoting Umoja's message of unity and teamwork.
Umoja is open to all children ages 6-17 and no experience is necessary. Umoja meets every Saturday from 11am to 1pm at Hamilton Hill Arts Center. The Umoja dancing and drumming season starts September 11, but new starters are welcome at any time. From time to time, adult African dance classes are offered at Hamilton Hill Arts Center.
