A New Birth of Freedom
1 March through 1 June 2009
At the Jerry Burrell Gallery

Freedom: A dream. A desire. A need. A goal. A destination. What is the color or shape of freedom? What does it look like? How do you show a current that runs through the history of all people of color--of all people? The title of this exhibit “A New Birth of Freedom” is also the theme of the recent inauguration of our 44th President.

This exhibit examines freedom through the eyes of the participating artists. While freedom means the same to most people, it can have personal meaning so different, depending on whom you ask.

In collaboration with this year’s Underground Railroad History Conference taking place in Schenectady, we take a fresh look at freedom and what it means to a segment of the American population, and America as a whole. The Historic election of Barrack Obama as the first African-American President, brings yet another dimension to the idea of freedom.
